Virtue=Strength
August Greetings Assumption Catholic Schools
It is hard to believe that the calendar has turned to August and the staff and students will return in a few short weeks for the start of the 2024-25 school year.. We have been busy preparing the buildings and materials for the new school year and look forward to welcoming everybody back.
I hope you have been able to enjoy time with friends and family this summer and pray that your August be filled with joy. August is a month that the church dedicates to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Mary is the patroness of Assumption Catholic Schools and we pray that she intercede for us with all our physical and spiritual needs.
Turning now to the Virtue=Strength message. I am resuming the weekly virtue messages centered on the materials provided by the program. As in past years, the first week of each month features the main virtue, and then each subsequent week a support virtue or strength. The materials are used in different ways throughout the schools, as classroom prayer starters, class or buidling wide ceremonies, and of course the original intent the athletic component. There is a new feature this year – a family component and more details on that will come from the building principals as the year gets underway.
For the month of August – the main virtue is VIRTUE – A virtue is an habitual and firm disposition to do the good.

PRAYER FOR VIRTUE BY ST. AUGUSTINE VIRTUE
Oh my Lord, let me love virtue as much as I abhor vice.
May Thy grace uphold me in sorrow, and restrain me in joy;
may it teach it me to despise the fleeting interests of this life; and above all things,
may it prompt me fervently to aspire to the everlasting bliss of heaven,
through Jesus my Lord and Saviour, who, with thee and the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth for ever. Amen.
HOW TO STRENGTHEN One way to grow in virtue is by setting resolutions. A resolution is a firm decision to do something good or to avoid something bad.
There are two important groups of virtues: Theological Cardinal
The Theological Virtues are like the ROOTS of the tree and give life to all the other virtues
They are called “theological” because they have God as their object.
“Faith, hope, and love” mean faith in God, hope in God, and love of God, and of neighbor for God’s sake.
The Cardinal Virtues
The term cardinal comes from the Latin cardo which means (HINGE).
These virtues are so called because they are regarded as the basic virtues required for a virtuous life.
Prudence or Wisdom
Justice or Fairness
Fortitude or Courage
Temperance or Moderation or Self-Control
